Disney Jr's
hey aj!
CONTEXT:
Hey A.J.! — produced by Surfing Giant Studios with executive producers Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, Michael Hodges, and Martellus Bennett — is an upcoming Disney Jr. and Disney+ family comedy series premiering in 2026.
Inspired by Bennett’s children’s book, the whimsical, music-filled show follows an imaginative young Black girl, A.J., and her stuffed bunny sidekick as they turn everyday moments into extraordinary adventures. The series features an all-star cast, including Amari McCoy as A.J., Martellus Bennett, Jhené Aiko, and Meghan Trainor.
CREATIVE DIRECTION:
As Cultural Consultant, I worked closely with the creative team to ensure A.J.’s portrayal as a young Black girl — and her family’s depiction — was authentic, respectful, and culturally resonant.
My contributions included:
Providing detailed notes on hair textures, styles, and maintenance to reflect natural Black hair accurately in a preschool-animated format
Reviewing skin tones, facial features, and wardrobe to ensure visual authenticity and avoid caricature
Advising on Black family dynamics and culture, including language, traditions, and everyday interactions
Offering guidance on subtleties of representation in children’s media, ensuring A.J. would be a relatable and empowering figure for young audiences
My role helped shape a series that celebrates the joy, creativity, and love within a modern Black family while avoiding harmful stereotypes and clichés.
